We propose to organize a four-day workshop for members of Columbia's Department of Astronomy and of the Instituto de Astrofisica of the Pontifica Universidad Catolica (PUC). Strengthening and expanding research connections between the two departments is an important strategic gal for both. The workshop, whose theme will be the time-domain astrophysics, will be hosted by the Global Center in Santiago, Chile, and attended by a dozen Columbia faculty and graduate students. It will enable discussions of scientific interests that are shared by faculty in both departments -- interest that span the range from understanding populations of nearby stars to exploring the behaviors of the most distant supermassive black holes. The workshop will also foster the development of new collaborative research projects attuned to the coming of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, and lay the groundwork for future exchanges, particularly of students.
